“Useful Time Wasting,” the title of Leroy Tindi’s college essay, refers to the endless time Leroy spent on the computer when he was young, using paint programs, creating presentations and surfing the web. It also refers to his mother’s accusation: “Get off the computer. There’s nothing you are doing beside wasting time!”

Leroy has been passionate about technology since he was very young. His interest and skill made him the “go to” person for technical support at home. When he was a seventh grader at Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy, he and his twin brother Lawy joined the MOUSE Squad program. Soon after, Leroy became the “go to” person in school, as well. “I remember on one occasion helping my English teacher with her laptop,” he said, “and feeling extremely proud of having helped someone.”

When Leroy entered high school, he continued his role on the MOUSE Squad, and also became a mentor to the Middle School MOUSE Squad students. He was selected to participate in the MOUSE Corps program, which provides additional leadership and professional opportunities for High School students.

One of the MOUSE Corps projects involved developing a project that would help others in their community. Leroy chose to develop an equipment inventory system that could be used by his school, as well as all NYC public schools, to track their electronic equipment. “This was perhaps the first time I had formal computer training experience working on a specific project to achieve a measurable and useful goal.”

Given the success of this project, Leroy was invited to present his Equipment Inventory system at the National Educational Computing Conference (NECC) in San Antonio, Texas. “I felt very happy when I was at NECC,” Leroy stated. “It helped me to see the impact of what I was doing and a direction for what I might want to do in the future.”

MOUSE Corps also provided Leroy with meaningful professional opportunities. During the spring of 10th grade, Leroy participated in a Shadowship at UBS, a worldwide finanical firm. Leroy “shadowed” IT professionals at UBS, learning about what they do and about the career paths they have taken. Leroy watched as they handled computer viruses and other technical issues. “At UBS, I realized that regardless of the company or industry, you will always need technology and the skills we learn as part of the MOUSE Squad,” Leroy shared, regarding his first professional experience.

After attending a MOUSE Corps workshop on resume and cover letter writing, Leroy created and submitted his resume for a Summer Internship. He was thrilled to learn that he had been selected for a paid summer internship at Citi on Wall Street. At Citi, Leroy had his own desk and computer and truly felt he was one of their IT specialists. He monitored their online problem tracking system and assigned himself technical issues he could resolve, including virus scans, computer hardware and software upgrades. “This was a life changing experience for me. It helped me to realize what I love to do -- and when you like what you are doing, you will be at your best.”

During 11th grade, Leroy and his brother developed a soccer video that would convey the importance of how to attain a goal. Using a soccer tryout scenario, they illustrated what it takes to make the soccer team. This gave Leroy experience in film production and editing, as well a chance to combine two of Leroy’s passions: technology and soccer. Leroy and Lawy presented this video at the NYC Digital Youth Media and Technology Festival.

Leroy will attend Ithaca College in Fall 2010 and plans to major in Computer Science. He was recently accepted into the Martin Luther King Scholarship Program that emphasizes citizenship and service in the global community, and challenges students to think critically, act compassionately and take a leadership role in advocating for social justice and equality.

When asked what he might want to pursue after college, Leroy responded, “I would like to help people from less developed countries in their daily lives and address some of the significant issues they are facing, hunger and poverty, as examples. Information is critical to addressing these issues and technology can provide the access to the information needed to tackle these problems.”

Reflecting on the experience with MOUSE, Leroy stated, “My whole experience has been broadened because of MOUSE. When I first joined MOUSE, I didn’t realize all the things I would get to do. I didn’t know much about fixing computers, but I learned that even if you don’t know, you should still try, because you never know what you can do.”
