What is the role of the Mouse students at Hudson?

According to Kaylah “Mouse is at the heart of our school -- it’s where everything is at.” She views Mouse as the place to have fun and learn something new.  At Hudson, students rely on technology for learning.  “We manage all the laptops and make sure they are always working.  We keep the school alive so that everyone can do their work at school.”

“Mouse has been a big influence in my life.  Through Mouse, I’ve learned about leadership and teamwork, and how I can create cool things for someone else. It’s helped me to see how I can better the world through technology.”  --Kaylah, Mouse Alum

What are some of the skills you have developed through being involved with Mouse?

Kaylah credits Mouse with helping her to grow as a leader.  “Learning to be a leader is not telling people what to do.  It’s being part of the team, taking initiative and bringing everyone together.”  She also feels that she has strongly enhanced her presentation skills.  “Everyone hears things differently.  I’ve learned how to project my voice, speak louder and talk slower."

Mouse has also sparked Kaylah’s creativity.  “Some schools do not let you use your creative mind.  Mouse makes it possible for kids to think about stuff and make it. Through Mouse, I found a new love of making everything by hand.”

What has been the impact of being a member of our Design League?

Kaylah has discovered her interests in using technology to help others.  “People usually think more about themselves. Through my involvement with Mouse, I think about how I can make new technology that can help other people.”  In working with individuals with cerebral palsy, Kaylah deepened her understanding of the challenges others face. “A lot of people need help with everyday living. Now I think, how can we make new technology that can help people.  I never thought about this until Mouse.”

What are your next steps after graduation?

Kaylah is attending the New York City College of Technology (City Tech) studying Computer Information System Security.  She is especially interested in security and application development.  “I think about how I can help people with security problems and how I can better the world from hackers.  Almost our entire lives are now on computers.  I want to play a part in helping others to keep their information safe."
