November Events 2016
This November has been busy for Mouse. In case you missed it, here’s what has been going on:
Maker Day
On Saturday November 19th over 50 young people came to the Mouse office in downtown NYC for the second ever Maker Day! Maker Day is the big sister to Mouse Maker Nights and featured more people and things to make than ever before. We were packed to capacity and thrilled to have such a huge turnout! Thank to everyone who showed up to create and collaborate with us.
At Maker Day attendees had a chance to try their hand at creating everything you can imagine, from building a DIY version of the game Operation to designing virtual reality headsets. Other makes included sewable electronics, powering turbines, DIY card games and board games, custom gaming controllers made out of play-dough and making a chatbot with Javascript.
To see projects made at both Maker Day and Maker Nights be sure to check out the Maker Night Hall of Fame. If you missed this Maker Day, don’t worry. We’ll be having another in March this year, so stay tuned to the Wire for more information. If you are a high school student or educator in the NYC area don’t forget to attend the next Maker Night on Thursday, December 15 from 4-6 PM.
Moveable Game Jam
On November 5th Mouse led a Twine based game-making activity at Movable Game Jam: Future Communities. This game jam is a part of a series of Game Jams supporting the 2016-2017 Games for Change Student Challenge. Each game jam has a different theme and a different location. This one focused on how technology can make future communities better places to live.
At this game jam, 70+ young people met energy experts and learned about how smart technologies and infrastructure can improve urban life and empower citizens. Then they participated in hands-on game making activities to apply their new knowledge to game design. The next game jam this year will be Saturday, December 10th in Brooklyn and it is called Movable Game Jam: Climate Change. See you there!
PlayTech Saturday
On Saturday, November 12th Parsons the New School for Design hosted another fantastic PlayTech Saturday! Twice a year, young people come out to test new games and digital projects made by Parsons students. At the end of the day PlayTech gave usb drives away!. We love PlayTech Saturday and can’t wait for the next one in the spring. Stay tuned to the Wire to find out more.
