DIY Mouse Microproject Winners

Congrats on finishing yet another productive school year! Over the last two months, we asked you all to create a tutorial for others on how to do something that you’ve already learned. We end each year of our monthly Microproject competition with this prompt and always look forward to the instructional guides you make. The submissions we received reminded us of just how much expertise and knowledge you all have built over the year. Thank you for your fantastic submissions to this project and the many others you submitted this year!

Grand Prize

Taking the Grand Prize of a $100 Adafruit Gift Certificate is “Movie Maker” by Zachary B, Elizabeth G, and Ethan N at McPherson Magnet School in Orange, CA! The tutorial made by this student trio would be a great place to start for an amateur cinematographer (the person on a movie set who makes decisions about what the cameras and lights should do) looking to make a movie of their own. This Movie Maker guide goes over the basics of using Microsoft Windows Movie Maker, including cuts, lighting, music, and filters. They even include a short horror movie of their own on the seventh slide that practices all of the techniques they preach. Excellent work, Zachary B, Elizabeth G, and Ethan N!

1st Runner Up

Our 1st Runner up receiving a $50 Adafruit Gift Certificate is “Fortnite Challenge Tutorial” by EBlandon at Burnsville Senior High School in Burnsville, Minnesota! This short tutorial gives insightful tips on how to complete a particular weekly challenge in the video game, Fortnite. We were blown away by the quality of the editing and sound in the video. EBlandon does a great job of showing the viewer exactly where to go in the game in order to complete the challenge and what obstacles to look out for, all while inserting some humour into the experience. Great job, EBlandon!

2nd Runner Up

Our 2nd Runner up, also receiving a $50 Adafruit Gift Certificate, is “How to use shortcuts on Chromebook” by Shirazk, KEITH/A, and JR_i_am_short at Rogers Middle School in Long Beach, CA! So many schools across the country use Chromebooks so we were impressed to see these students draw from their personal knowledge and research to complete this helpful guide. All of the included shortcuts have practical applications so you’d be hard-pressed to find a Chromebook user who wouldn’t benefit from them. Awesome work, Shirazk, KEITH/A, and JR_i_am_short!

Honorable Mentions

SAVING STRAYS & FERALS by 18natasli is an excellent website advocating for the humane treatment of stray and feral cats.

Windows install drive by SamS. is a handy guide on how to install Windows OS on your computer.

How to Speedrun by Rtamayo details the process of speedrunning, or completing a videogame as fast as humanly possible.

Shoutout to all the creative, inspiring students who participated in this Microproject and the many others this year. We had a great run! Now’s the time to relax and refresh over summer vacation but make sure to come back in September when we release the first competition of the new school year!
