JHS 157 kids named top techies in U.S., Queens Chronicle
The technology-focused Mouse Squad at JHS 157 in Forest Hills, the Stephen A. Halsey School, was honored last week at City Hall after having been named the best of its kind in the nation earlier this year.
Mouse trains students to become technology experts, teaching them skills for college and careers and empowering them to learn, lead and create using their digital knowledge. The program, whose name derives from Making Opportunities for Upgrading Schools and Education, connects students around the country to create a network of youth technology leaders.
Halsey’s Mouse Squad has been together for more than eight years and is now made up of three 15-student teams that each meet once a week. Among other projects, they work on 3-D printing, training students at other schools on how to use it and even participating in a special program with the American Museum of Natural History to create models of dinosaurs using the new technology. They create games, work on robotics and also help with tasks such as installing new computers and printers at the school.
The students were presented with a proclamation honoring their success Nov. 13 at City Hall by Councilwoman Karen Koslowitz, center left, and were joined in the celebration by several other lawmakers including, from Queens, Councilman Paul Vallone, right.
