Winners for Mouse "Pixel Mosaic" Microproject!
For the first monthly competition of the new school year, we challenged you all to think of some goals you hold for yourself and make a pixel art image that represents these goals. This project was inspired by the million pixel artwork made on Reddit, and we received over 100 submissions from learners who practiced their pixel art making skills to work on some really impressive entries. We even received enough to make our own collage that represents the many goals of the Mouse community! Thanks for all of your wonderful work!
Grand Prize
Our Grand Prize winner was made by 323dianaL at P.S. 139 in Queens, NY! 323dianaL’s submission really impressed us with its clear attention to detail. 323dianaL’s expert use of shading in the flames that stream from the rocket gives this art piece a do-more-with-less look that pixel art really does well. We also really liked how 323dianaL chose to depict the emptiness of space by varying the sizes of the white dots on the canvas to give a sense of the many difference objects that light up the night sky like planets, asteroids or stars. Fantastic work, 323dianaL!
1st Runner Up
Our 1st Runner up was made by Gissel.mariee from McPherson Magnet School in Orange, CA! The thing we appreciated most about this submission was its use of a metaphor to visualize the learning process. Gissel.mariee’s stated goal was to get better at coding but this submitted work doesn’t contain any obvious references to code or programming specifically. Instead, Gissel.mariee went for a more abstract approach and created the above design that shows a person ascending multiple mountains until they reach the top. The gray line that traces the person’s path as they get higher and higher up, goes up and down sometimes but the person always gets a bit higher than where they started, which is a beautiful message to us. Great job, Gissel.mariee.
2nd Runner Up
Our 2nd Runner up is Uttter_ from Rogers Middle School in Long Beach, CA! It would be very hard to overstate Uttter_’s talent after viewing this pixel art! The shading on the character’s front pocket and in the flower’s petals are terrific. The character’s clothes on its left shoulder bend in a way that’s really realistic and well done. We also loved that the character seems to be Uttter_’s personal creation. Keep up the excellent work, Uttter_!
Our honorable mentions go out this month to:
- 321amys’s submission depicted a girl & clarinet with surprising detail.
- HypeJJMonkey’s submission had really cute, accurate drawings of lightbulbs and computer mice.
- 323melaniel’s submission made good grades its biggest feature.
- Abel.s submission was a clever nod to construction on a blueprint-like backdrop.
- 139alvinl’s submission was just the right mix or playful, quirky and aspirational.
Our Grand Prize winner will receive a $50 Adafruit Gift Certificate for their school, and our 1st and 2nd Runners up will each win a prize of their choice from our new prize chest! We have seven more competitions lined up this school year and the second one is currently underway! This month your challenge is to make an original song using Google Song Maker!
