Mozilla and Hive Learning Fund Award $50K to Support Web Literacy Movement

Mouse is honored to receive a $25,000 grant from the Hive Digital Media Learning Fund, which was matched by a $25,000 grant from the Mozilla Foundation, to design learning resources and support educators working to empower youth as champions, makers, and savvy citizens of the web.

In 2010, the Hive Digital Media Learning Fund was created by the MacArthur Foundation and The New York Community Trust to bring together and support organizations which provide youth with exciting opportunities to learn through digital media and technology. The Hive Digital Media Fund supports organizations such as Mouse that are part of the Mozilla Hive NYC Learning Network.

Established in 2003, the Mozilla Foundation is a non-profit organization that promotes "openness, innovation and participation on the internet."

With the support of these grants, Mouse will begin to develop original content and learning resources that will align with Mozilla Community's new Learning Map for Web Literacy. These resources will be available for distribution to educators and HIVE organization members.

In addition to building new resources, Mouse will use matched funding from Mozilla Foundation to begin building a community of educators from Mouse's national learning network who will support a youth-as-educator initiative to bring WebMaker resources to a wider community of peers and practitioners.

"Mouse is well-poised to step in as a mentor organization in this effort, having been an active member of the WebMaker community since its inception, a participating member of the community to build the Web Literacy Standard, and a leader in the development of digital badging systems," stated Marc Lesser, Mouse Education Director. "Our mission is to connect youth with the skills and literacies needed to help them take on leadership roles as makers with technology in their learning, life, and careers.  Supporting web literacy is a major part of that effort."

We are incredibly excited to continue this project and engage with our HIVE NYC partners to give NYC youth more opportunities to build their skills and understanding of the web! Many thanks to the Hive Digital Media Learning Fund and the Mozilla Foundation for their generous and continued support!
